Here are some helpful hints for the in-house marketing team. These are very simple, but often overlooked, tips for getting the most out of your marketing photos.

Exposure: Make sure that your subject or product is well-lit, not in shadow or silhouetted, and keep in mind that shooting in the middle of the day creates harsh shadows.

Sharpness: Ensure that your subject is in focus.

Resolution: Shooting at a high quality is always the best, as you can always go down in resolution in post-production but you can never go back up.

Models: When using people in your photographs the difficult part is making them look comfortable. The model and photographer will eventually start to feel comfortable after time, but when it happens it will be noticeable and the photos will reflect that. There is nothing worse than a fake smile.

Composition: Make sure that your subject is not cropped to closely.

Background: People tend to neglect the background, but making sure that your model or product make sense in its environment is a big deal. Alternatively, if you are shooting a product, try photographing it on a plain coloured background, preferably white, its easier to etch later in post-production.

Angles: It never hurts to try different angles, especially when it comes to shooting product photos. If you think about the way Apple shoots the iPhone they make it look much larger than it actually is, it looks more substantial, it looks grand. There is psychology in the way Apple shoot their products, and that leads into the most important aspect – interest.

Interest: It hasn’t been mathematically proven, but a picture does tell 1000 words – and if you can get the audience’s interest with a photo the hard part is done.
If you manage to get the EXPOSURE, FOCUS, RESOLUTION, MODELS, COMPOSITION, BACKGROUND and ANGLE right – you will be well on your way to a photo that generates interest and sells your product.
