BPG: Better Portable graphics

When was the last time you can recall a new image file type changing the way that people posted photos on the internet?

The GIF has become an art form (check out juliendouvier.com) and the PNG is a great tool for developers working with transparency and layers on websites. The JPG dominates the internet, but the technology of compression is dated.

The JPG had its beginnings in the late 1980s as a file type format created by Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) and was launched in 1992. JPG works on a lossy form of compression, reducing the data by limiting the amount of colours or dithering

Basically, any image on the internet has been optimised, purely for speed.

Until now.

BPG

The BPG or Better Portable Graphics uses a High Efficiency Video Coding to compress images. You need to see it in action here. This is just an example, a preview of the technology. But lets leave the technicalities to a minimum, and discuss its application or the possibilities.

Imagine having a digital magazine that was not at a low resolution.

Imagine websites loading faster.

Imagine an equivalent version of 4K as standard on the internet.

Imagine having four times the space on your camera or phone.

Imagine the internet loading faster, regardless of the hardware.

Imagine a world where there is virtually no low res or high resjust better graphics.

Next edition we will discuss the Light L16 Camera. It has 16 lenses.
