Message from the Minister
Welcome to the NSW Minerals Industry Annual. The mining industry plays a vital role in the NSW economy, providing jobs in regional and rural areas and sustaining entire communities. In fact, the NSW minerals industry provides around 20,000 direct jobs and at least three times this number indirectly through related services and flow on industries.
In the past financial year, the NSW minerals industry has experienced an upturn as a result of significantly higher coal and metallic mineral prices. NSW production of copper, coal and lead increased over the previous year, while gold and silver remained constant.
Strong global economic growth and supply constraints have driven mineral prices, with the value of NSW mineral production reaching around $11.7 billion in 2005-06. With coal and mineral prices continuing to remain firm in 2006-07, the outlook for the minerals industry in NSW remains very positive. The value of NSW mineral production for 2006-07 is forecast to further increase to over $12 billion. In particular, the value of metallic mineral production is forecast to increase by around $1 billion to over $3.7 billion.
The NSW Government provides enormous incentives for explorers to invest in NSW through its seven year $30 million "Exploration NSW" and $8 million "New Frontiers" exploration initiatives. In fact, surveys carried out through the NSW Government's Exploration NSW initiative have meant that the state now has 80% coverage with high resolution airborne geophysical data, a critical information asset for the exploration industry.
The success of these programs is demonstrated by the record private-sector mineral exploration expenditures in NSW. In 2005-06, private mineral and petroleum exploration investment reached a record of more than $140 million. Forecasts for 2006-07 suggest private mineral and petroleum exploration in NSW will be about $190 million.
The increase in coal and mineral prices has encouraged the development of several new coal, mineral and petroleum projects. This is borne out in new capital expenditure data for the NSW minerals industry, which reached a record $1.7 billion in 2005-06, the fourth consecutive year above $1 billion.
Safety is another key priority for the NSW Government, which has set a goal of zero fatalities and serious injuries for the state's mining industry. New safety legislation will provide the platform for continued improvement.
We are also working to enhance the environmental sustainability of our mining industries.
The NSW Government and industry are working together through partnerships on clean coal technologies to help curb greenhouse gas emissions, including technologies for the capture and sequestration of carbon dioxide into safe geological storage sites. The NSW Government has a clear commitment to ensure our mining sectors continue to be safe, prosperous and sustainable well into the future.
The Hon Ian Macdonald
