Message from the Minister
Welcome to the 2009 NSW Coal Industry Profile. The past year has seen New South Wales experience an unprecedented resources boom particularly in the coal industry, and the outlook is for another strong year ahead.
Coal mining is one the State's most important industries, creating significant regional employment and fuel for low-cost electricity generation and steel making. It also generates vital export income. In fact, coal underpins the international competitiveness of the State's economy.
During this past year, New South Wales has again set new records for both production and exports. The value of NSW mineral production reached $11.7 billion in 2005-06. The value for coal production alone was $8.5 billion, which is up by $1.5 billion compared to the year previous.
The sustained boom in the coal industry has seen several mining projects come to fruition, a number of new mines opened, and more jobs created. In fact, jobs in the NSW coal mining industry grew by over 1300 during the past year, bringing the total number of direct jobs generated by the State's coal industry to 12 658 at June 2006. This represents two-thirds of the State's full-time mining employment.
Coal mining in NSW is an increasingly sophisticated, hi-tech activity with continuous improvements in technology, occupational health and safety, and environmental performance.
The NSW Government's focus on mine safety continues to be strong, and we have recently taken additional steps to help achieve zero fatalities and serious injuries. For instance, we have created a stronger Mine Safety Advisory Council and continue to implement other recommendations of the Wran Mine Safety Review.
We also continue to support sound environmental practices, including mine site rehabilitation and the development of new clean coal technologies to help curb greenhouse emissions.
With the best-developed mining related infrastructure in the country and sophisticated geoscience information, NSW is poised to attract increased international investment for many years to come.
The Hon Ian Macdonald, MLC
