Location, location, location. This spectacular idyllic paradise is only a two hour flight from Sydney and Brisbane. And with only 400 visitors allowed on the island at any one time, it’s a holiday that naturally lends itself to a quiet rejuvenating retreat. Don’t let that mislead you though, there’s plenty to keep you amused on Lord Howe, from fishing, diving and surfing to tramping through the bush to fine dining experiences – you’ll be hard pressed to choose just what to do!
World Heritage Listed for its rare collection of birds and plants, the island’s coral reef and marine life are also a treasured feature and provide a fantastic opportunity for snorkeling. The island is a bird watchers paradise with more than 130 permanent and migratory bird species including the unique endangered woodhen, a flightless species of bird saved by conservation efforts in the last decades.
The island began exporting its native Kentia Palm to Europe and North America in the 1870s. The popular palm is still the major industry for Lord Howe today, aside from tourism. You can visit the Kentia Palm Nursery which returns all profits to the community, assisting with the preservation of the natural eco-system.
Make sure you pack a torch, sunscreen and a hat and if you have reef shoes you will find they will become part of your daily dress as you explore the spectacular island. For the more adventurous, try trekking up to Mt Gower, a challenging but rewarding eight hour hike.
You will find a mild climate, year round on Lord Howe Island. In summertime the temperatures reach 25ºc, in wintertime it only drops to 19ºc. Walking is the regular mode of transport as everything is close. For a little more speed, you can hire a bicycle and helmet. You will be met at the airport by your local hosts and they will also assist with your departure arrangements.
