Fleet Managers who use Navman Wireless are able to optimise fleet operations and add value by tracking, measuring and improving. Reduce your risks and maximise efficiency.
Navman Wireless helps fleet managers by providing a software solution that uses GPS technology to track, monitor and help manage vehicles, plant and equipment. They track 35,000 vehicles across Australasia alone, and 130,000 vehicles worldwide, with staff in 10 countries. While traditionally strong in the service and transport industries, they are now seeing adoption of GPS fleet management in a wide variety of sectors which are looking for improved utilisation, ways to reduce their carbon
footprint and systems to support OH&S requirements.
A small tracking device is attached to vehicles or equipment, which then transmits key data through the Telstra network back to their PC or iPhone. Managers can easily view vehicle location, speed, driver hours, usage rates and more, providing an in-depth view into all aspects of their fleet. An optional navigation and messaging device can be added, providing easier communication between the office and field staff, and improving route planning.
Tamworth Regional Council is one of the biggest councils in NSW, servicing 58,000 residents and a thriving business community including building, retail, industry, hospitality and agriculture. Chris Davidson, from the Executive Office, Regional Services Directorate, was instrumental in implementing GPS fleet management in their fleet, which provide services across 1,200 kilometres of sealed regional and local roads, 2,000 kilometres of unsealed roads plus 250 separate parks and reserves.
Their fleet includes graders, lawn mowers, slashers, street sweepers, tar patching trucks, water trucks and general service vehicles. The Council uses Navman Wireless to track 35 of their vehicles, and has already seen improvements in productivity and customer service.
“We’ve seen a 30% increase in productivity across our graders, and plan to use Navman Wireless technology to create benchmarks across our entire fleet. It’s essential that we understand how our vehicles are being used, and have the ability to review where we’re doing well, and where we need to improve,” Davidson said.
“It’s also useful to be able to prove when and where services have been delivered, and be able to promptly respond to community enquiries about whether or not a certain stretch of road has been graded.”
A key feature of the Navman Wireless solution is the ability to easily generate reports showing fleet activity at the driver and vehicle level. Managers can pull up a report across sub-sets of drivers, or their entire staff, providing insight into hours worked, time spent on site and other key indicators.
This allows managers to identify and address potential issues before they become a problem, or gain additional insight into specific incidents, such as customer complaints or alleged traffic violations.
Patterns can also be identified which allow organisations to improve their fuel usage and reduce their environmental impact. Tamworth Regional Council used the reports to improve the routes their mower crews used and thereby improve productivity and reduce fuel usage.
Davidson says, “Reports are a key element of how we use Navman Wireless, we review hours worked and locations visited. We’ve also seen an improvement in billing accuracy for Private Works.”
Occupational Health and Safety rules vary by state, but the themes of ensuring driver safety and establishing appropriate systems are universal. Navman Wireless lets managers locate which driver is in which vehicle, and where it is, all from their PC. Managers can establish appropriate guidelines to manage driver fatigue and behaviour, and receive notifications when the guidelines are not met, such as overspeed incidents. This helps managers to proactively meet their OH&S
obligations and have concrete information in the case of a breach.
With tighter budgets and financial constraints, organisations are using GPS fleet management to track utilisation across their fleet – whether reducing unauthorised use, or improving job allocation and therefore increasing authorised use. Fleet Managers can also set up flags to immediately notify them if a vehicle is being used out-of-hours, or pull a regular report to identify any issues.
