There has been national recognition for the need to raise education standards and reform curriculums to nurture an appreciation of diversity and expand the general knowledge of Indigenous culture and issues amongst school communities. Embedding the perspective of Indigenous Australian culture into traditional curriculum subjects will enrich students’ understanding and respect for cultural diversity in Australia and the historical development of this nation.

The Cultural Infusion Schools’ program promotes cultural diversity and awareness through an intercultural and multi-disciplinary arts incursion and workshop program, utilising cultural presenters from diverse cultures and backgrounds. Cultural Infusion’s Indigenous Officer, Djarrin Blow, is passionate about the promotion of his culture. “I enjoy sharing my culture and stories with students of all ages” Djarrin Says. “I want them to be able to see an authentic experience, hear the stories passed down through our peoples for centuries and to hopefully inspire them to learn more about it.”

Djarrin presents a traditional Aboriginal performance, Warramar Man, providing experience and knowledge from the oldest living culture in the world. The program provides an overview of Indigenous cultural ways of life, giving students the opportunity to experience and participate in traditional dance and storytelling. Djarrin also conducts the Aboriginal Culture for a Day program, an immersive program that provides a more in-depth experience.

“You added a real injection of Indigenous culture to the day and helped to share with many who may have not experienced the beauty of the sound of the didgeridoo live, or traditional Indigenous dancing, the beauty of your culture.” Mornington Peninsula Council Warramar Man is but one example of Cultural Infusion’s incursion program which aims to enrich curriculum by ensuring schooling contributes to a cohesive society that respects and appreciates cultural, social and religious diversity. The program allows students to develop an understanding of cultures beyond that of the historical artefact, encouraging them to interact with and contribute to the global community.
